FILL IN THE BLANK (2 of 4): "What Does It Look Like to Glorify God in My Work?" HOFFMANN

We are created in God's image, instilled with His purpose. Life's accomplishment is experienced in the daily demonstration of His goal. What is God's purpose for you? How can your work glorify God? These are two questions we'll address and apply for life.

What is work?

A sustained exercise of strength and skill that overcomes obstacles to produce and accomplish something. ~ David Miller

Work is good. Jesus worked.

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

John 17:1-5 ESV (bold added for emphasis)

Giving Glory to God in Work

[1] Work with God's reputation in mind.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17 ESV

Christians who grasp a biblical theology of work learn not only to value and participate in the work of all people but to also see a way to work distinctively as Christians. ~ Tim Keller

[2] Gain the more extensive "work" perspective. You're loving your neighbor through your vocation.

She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. 16 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. 17 She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. 20 She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. Proverbs 31:13-20 ESV

[3] Repent of all egocentric work expectations.
