FEARLESS (1of 3): "Why Do You Fear Change?" Hoffmann

We struggle with fear—the fear of change, the unknown, and loss. This series unpacks fear and how to release fear's grip that often holds us prisoner.

The scene depicts the laying of the foundation of the new temple. Those present in the text either celebrated with shouts of joy or tears of grief. Fear often finds a home in loss and grief. This talk helps the listeners deal with the fear of loss and gain a new appreciation for the new God is doing. Don't fear change.

Ezra 3:10–13 (ESV): And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments came forward with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord, according to the directions of David king of Israel. 11 And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, "For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever toward Israel." And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers' houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, 13 so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people's weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.

Why do I fear this change?

How do I embrace this change?

For His Glory

Isaiah 43:19 (ESV): Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

John 15:1-5 (ESV): “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. [Bold added]
