Listening to God’s Voice: Discerning God’s Call

1 Samuel 3:10-11 ESV: And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” 11 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 

Acts 9:5-7 ESV: And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” 7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. 

Psalm 25:4-5 ESV: Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. 5  Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.  

James 1:5 ESV: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 

Thoughts on Discerning God’s Call 

1. Inventory your passions, talents, and experiences.  

1. Seek guidance from a trusted mentor, advisor, or friend.  

1. Serve others.  

1. Articulate and align with your deepest values and beliefs.  

1. Pray seeking and surrendered.  

1. Listen to the voices around you while filtering and prioritizing the content.  

1. Watch for opening doors.
