The Journey of Peace
December 10, 2023
Dr. Brad Hoffmann, pastor
Luke 2:13-15 ESV: And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”
John 14:27 ESV: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
How can I cultivate peace?
Forgiveness:
Colossians 3:13 ESV: Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Simplicity & Contentment:
Hebrews 13:5 ESV: Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Gratitude:
Colossians 3:15 ESV: And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
The Spiritual Disciplines:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV: Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Humility:
James 4:10 ESV: Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
How can I extend peace?
Model Christ:
Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV: Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Practice Peacemaking:
Matthew 5:9 ESV: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Promote Unity:
Ephesians 4:1-3 ESV: I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Offer Support:
Galatians 6:2 ESV:
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Live Justly:
Micah 6:8 ESV: He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God
How will you cultivate and extend peace?
