Hope for the Weary Soul

A Biblical Theology of Mental Health

  1. We are integrated beings.
  2. Living in a fallen world affects every part of us.
  3. Faithful people struggled deeply.
  4. God welcomes honest prayer.

Psalm 42:3-5 ESVMy tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation

I Kings 19:3-5 ESVThen he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.”

If someone you love is struggling…

  • Listen before fixing.
  • Stay before solving.
  • Pray before preaching.
  • Walk before explaining.
  • Presence often ministers more deeply than answers.
