Soaring to Old and New Heights

by David Moore on April 17, 2020

“Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.”

Philippians 4:4 KJV

I recently strolled through a neighborhood park and saw a lot of people enjoying the outdoors. Some were jogging, some riding bikes, others skating and a few were walking their dogs. All of them were practicing social distancing. What especially caught my attention was a mom and her child flying a kite. For some reason, I was captivated by this simple, yet extremely underrated activity. Why don’t more people fly kites? I think Benjamin Franklin would be so disappointed!

The kite flying brought a smile to my face. It served as an excellent reminder that, in addition to trying new hobbies during this time, maybe it would be equally valuable to pick up an old one. When I was growing up, I remember reading and memorizing scripture through the King James Version (a special shout out to my KJV people out there). However, when I got to college, I started diving into other Bible translations. I really have not used KJV since that time (sorry to my KJV people out there). I am, however, still fond of the classic translation as it was instrumental in my spiritual upbringing. I literally remember the first time I heard John 3:16—in the KJV—which soon after became my Bible translation of choice to memorize scripture. This might be a time to “bringeth” back the old KJV Bible and re-develop this valuable habit.

What about you? Maybe this could be the right time for you to bring back an old hobby or habit! Perhaps you could restart journaling or try new cooking recipes or ride your bike around the park or maybe you can fly that kite! You may discover what made those hobbies and habits so great in the first place. Soar to both old and new heights during this season. Rejoice in the Lord’s presence as you do so!

Blessings
