Little Things

by Jen Willard on November 17, 2020

God has recently been teaching me about faithfulness in obedience; obedience in minor things. Sometimes these promptings seem small and insignificant, but I can see that substantial changes are often dependent upon something small. We have no idea what work God is doing behind the scenes, and we do not really understand why He would limit himself by working through humans. I am speaking for myself. I do not know why he would choose to limit himself in that way but I assume it is so we can participate in His work and strengthen our faith muscle.

Here are some of the “minor things” that God often asks me to do. He will bring someone to my mind and ask me to pray for them or reach out to check on them, especially in this era of COVID. God will prompt me to say something encouraging to my teen such as “Thank you so much for putting your bowl in the dishwasher. I really appreciate it.” God also reminds me to eat a piece of cheese or a handful of nuts instead of Halloween candy. Man, that is a tough one!

Derek Nicksich, our High School Minister, reminded us in week 12 of his 19 for 19 Challenge that obedience is not to earn salvation. Salvation is a gift. Obedience is because of our salvation. We should WANT to do what God asks us to do because He loved us first. Obedience becomes the fruit of a changed heart.

If God prompts you to reach out to someone and invite them to have coffee or lunch, do it! If God prompts you to grab your daughter’s dirty socks and throw them into the hamper for her rather than argue with her for the third time that evening, do it! God can take that small act of obedience and accomplish remarkable things.
