Laughter

by Shane Standlick on June 10, 2020

The other night, Megan and I were playing a game called “Heads Up.” You know, the one where you hold the phone to your forehead and guess what word is on the phone while your partner gives you clues. We got to a category called “Sound It Out - It’s time to make some noise! Get your teammates to guess what’s on the card by making sound effects, no talking.” As Megan read the description of the round aloud, I thought to myself, “How am I ever going to be able to give her clues?” I quickly gathered myself as the round began. The first word was “crow,” so I closed my mouth and started making a sound like a crow. “KaKaw, KaKaw," but it sounded more like, "MaMaw, MaMaw.” I kept doing it, confused at why she wasn’t getting it. I reread the word and started laughing to myself. It said “CROWD” not “crow.” “Pass!” I said, because how is a person going to make the sound of a crowd with their mouth closed. This was my first mistake in the round.

We kept going and passed card after card. I had no idea how I was supposed to make sounds with my mouth closed. Try it yourself. Make the sound of a phone ringing with your mouth closed. It doesn’t work, does it? Time ran out and I opened my mouth. We just stared at each other, confused at what had just transpired. Then, we started laughing to the point where we were both crying. Nowhere in the instructions did it say to keep my mouth closed, just not to talk. Where had I gone wrong? I guess it was getting late and I was tired!

Point is, we were laughing…and crying (tears of joy). Amidst all that is going on in our world, it was so great to just laugh and to find joy in something so silly! It was good for the soul!

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope

                                                                                    Romans 15:13 (ESV)

In Jesus we find joy. In Him we find hope. Let us be filled with joy and hope in the One who created us. Laughter fills us with joy. It’s okay to laugh at yourself.

What have you found joy in recently? Have you made a fool of yourself doing something funny? I’d love to hear about it! Email me at .

Stay well!
