Just Make It to Breakfast

by Ted Tussey on November 07, 2020

If we’re honest with ourselves, most of us would admit to being worriers. In Matthew 6: 25-34, Jesus warns us not to worry about what we’ll eat, drink and wear but tells us to first, seek God’s Kingdom and righteousness and these things will follow. The last verse is, “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.  Each day has enough trouble of its own.”    Matthew 6:34

The local paper recently reported that the head coach of a major Virginia college football team invited a former Navy SEAL to attend their preseason training. Navy SEALS probably endure the most rigorous, demanding and difficult training of any US military special operations group. Because this time of COVID has been extremely challenging for college athletics, the guest made an interesting and important comment to the coach – “You’ve got to find a way to just make it to breakfast.” The SEAL used this mindset to endure each day of his grueling training. He meant that when we’re overwhelmed by life’s events like he was during SEAL training, don’t look too far ahead but just find a way to make it to breakfast. And when that’s done, just make it to lunch and then to dinner, and on and on. It’s like the timeless question, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

This is sound advice because it’s easy to become overwhelmed during uncertain times. In our current season, things surely seem unpredictable and unsure – a worrier’s paradise. It’s wise not to look too far forward but instead – just make it to breakfast . . .
