Heavenly Humor

by Ted Tussey on August 07, 2020

Usually serious in nature, at times the Bible can be humorous, if not downright funny.  Within its pages we find mystery, poetry, romance, history, tragedy and other elements that make it interesting to read. So, why not some humor occasionally?

The Old Testament seems to have the “humor edge.” In 1 Kings, Elijah and 450 Baal prophets stacked wood beneath animal sacrifices, agreed to call on their god and, “the god who answers by fire – he is God.” From morning to noon, the Baal boys repeatedly shouted, “O Baal, answer us,” as they danced around their altar. An amused Elijah taunted, “Shout louder, surely he is a god!” Perhaps he’s occupied, busy, on a journey or sleeping!” They continued until evening but, of course, there was no answer. It was a funny scene, for sure. Elijah doused his sacrifice with water and called on God to respond. Everything near his altar was completely consumed by fire. Also, you may chuckle about Jehu driving his chariot around like a high-performance sports car in 2 Kings and Balaam’s conversation with his talking donkey in Numbers.

My men’s group is currently studying Jonah. I love when God sends a worm to devour the disgruntled prophet’s precious shade plant in Chapter 4. Can you imagine his expression?? Oh well Jonah, easy come – easy go!

Speaking of humor, I’m sure God chuckles when He views my life as I frequently try taking charge of everything without consulting Him. That’s not only humorous, but it’s usually a disaster as well. Can you relate?
