Abounding in Steadfast Love

by Brenda Kidd on April 09, 2020

As I’ve read through the Old Testament in recent months, I’ve been struck by the phrase “abounding in steadfast love.”  The phrase is referenced several times in prayer to God and about God and produces a beautiful image in my mind’s eye of God’s priceless love for us. Synonyms for abound are abundant and overflowing, and steadfast is defined as unwavering. God is abounding in steadfast love for His people; He has an abundant, overflowing, unwavering love. Soak on that for a moment. Reflect on the enormity of that!  Can we even comprehend that kind of love?

The ultimate display of God’s love is in Jesus and the Resurrection story. What an incredible love!  What an incredible story! I can hear all my Awana friends reciting John 3:16; the very first verse every clubber learns. Say it with me:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

We can find enormous encouragement in these words from Jesus. God revealed His great love by choosing to give His only Son and, through Jesus, offered salvation to all mankind. Spend time today focusing on the abundant, overflowing, unwavering love of God found in Jesus Christ. It’s an amazing love meant to flow out to others. In John 13, Jesus sets the example of love for one another by washing the disciples’ feet and then tells them:

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

As a Jesus Follower, how can you show that kind of love today? Reach out on this Maundy Thursday and show love for one another.

Blessings,
